Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress Review: An Introduction

A combination of polyfoam and pocketed coils in the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm create robust support that is suitable for sleepers across a variety of sleep positions and body weights. The bed's construction and materials help it remain cool throughout the night, and strong edge support makes getting in and out of bed feel easy.

Raymour & Flanigan is a family-owned chain of furniture stores spread across the Northeastern U.S. Founded in 1946 in Syracuse, New York, the company sells mattresses from a dozen brands and under their own name. The Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress is the firmest of the four mattresses in the brand's current line, and is manufactured by Bellanest.

How We Review

We brought the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm into our sleep lab to evaluate it using our original mattress testing methodology. We perform hands-on tests to identify how well each bed performs in a variety of categories, including movement isolation, edge support, and heat retention. Our testing team represents a diverse range of body weights and sleep position preferences to ensure our ratings are applicable to most people.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm?

The Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm's comfort system lightly cushions the body, but doesn't have the deep, conforming "hug" of memory foam. The pocketed coil layer provides some pushback, which makes changing sleeping positions feel simple. Above-average edge support means most sleepers feel secure sleeping or sitting on the edge of the mattress without it folding.

The Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm slept cool during our in-house tests, performing better in temperature regulation than many of its all-foam counterparts. Motion isolation was average, but most sleepers will not be bothered by movement on the bed's surface. The steady coil bounce makes this model a good mattress for sex — another reason couples may enjoy it.

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

Although "extra firm" is in the name of the mattress, we consider it to be a firm (7) model. We measure the firmness of each mattress we test and give it a rating according to our firmness scale. On the scale, 1 is extra soft and 10 is extra firm. Most mattresses we test fall in the medium (5) to medium firm (6) range.

Our diverse testing team allows us to rate a mattress in terms of the performance not only overall, but according to a sleeper's body weight and sleep position preference. Carefully considering your weight and the sleep positions you use can help you determine whether a particular mattress will feel comfortable and provide adequate support.

Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress Ratings

Under 130 lbs. 130-230 lbs. Over 230 lbs.
Side Sleepers 6.5/10 7.5/10 9/10
Back Sleepers 8/10 8.5/10 8/10
Stomach Sleepers 7.5/10 8/10 7/10

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers weighing over 230 pounds rated the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm higher than any other group. For these sleepers, this mattress allows the heavier hips and shoulders to sink into the comfort layers while continuing to support the body in a way that keeps the spine aligned. Side sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 found the bed to be of average comfort, but those under 130 pounds generally prefer a much softer mattress.

Back Sleepers

Regardless of body weight, back sleepers rated the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm highly, finding that the mattress provided the right mix of comfort and support. A firm mattress is ideal for many back sleepers because it prevents the lower body from sinking in too deeply, which can put strain on the lower back. This mattress doesn't feel too firm to back sleepers, however, as its polyfoam comfort layers cushion the body.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers tend to require firmer mattresses because those that allow the midsection to sink in too much can lead to back and neck pain. In our tests, stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds liked the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm the most. This group felt properly supported and very comfortable on the bed. Ratings were lower, but still favorable, from stomach sleepers under 130 pounds and over 230 pounds.

Our Performance Ratings

Pressure Relief

7/10

This bed's combination of bouncy pocketed coils and a polyfoam comfort system help keep your body weight evenly distributed across the mattress' surface. This prevents pressure from building up beneath joints, which in turn can lead to discomfort or pain. While this mattress relieves pressure well, it doesn't provide the "hugging" sensation that some sleepers seek in a mattress, which usually comes from memory foam.

Temperature Control

8/10

The Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress sleeps cool. Hybrid mattresses have an advantage when it comes to temperature regulation, because the space inside of the coils allows air to circulate and heat to dissipate. The lack of memory foam, which can trap heat, along with a gel infusion in the top comfort layer also help keep temperatures down.

Motion Isolation

7/10

This mattress isolates motion fairly well, but our testers did notice some movement across the bed's surface in our testing. Most sleepers won't be bothered by motion on this bed's surface. However, those who are particularly sensitive to movement may prefer an all-foam mattress — especially one with motion-absorbing memory foam layers.

Perimeter Support

8/10

Thicker coils around the edges ensure strong perimeter support, so sleepers can comfortably sit or lie on the edge of the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress without worrying about it compressing too deeply beneath them. Strong edge support also makes getting in and out of bed easier.

Durability

6/10

Durability can be difficult to assess, but we estimate the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm will last around 7 years, give or take a year, before it begins showing noticeable signs of wear and tear. Foam comfort layers are usually the first to degrade, while pocketed coils tend to last longer.

Ease of Movement

7.5/10

The comfort system in the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm cushions the body, but it's still fairly easy to move around on the surface of this mattress. The pocketed coils provide a springiness that facilitates movement. The comfort layers are made of polyfoam, not memory foam, so they are less likely to form lasting body impressions that impede movement.

Sex

7.5/10

The Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm performs well for sex. Pocketed coils add pushback, making movement on the bed feel fairly easy. A reinforced perimeter keeps edges sturdy and rolling off the bed is also less likely. While foam layers may cushion the body somewhat, polyfoam does not hug your body and make you feel stuck in bed like adaptive memory foam.

Odor Emissions

7.5/10

When their packaging is first opened, new mattresses release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that were created during manufacturing. This process is called off-gassing. The odors produced are generally considered safe, but some people dislike them. The Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm emits some off-gassing odor, but the smells should dissipate in a matter of days, if not hours.

What Is the Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Made Of?

The Sleep by Raymour & Flanigan Extra Firm Mattress is constructed with polyfoam, pocketed coils, and a polyester cover. The foams are CertiPUR-US certified, which means they have been evaluated and deemed free of certain chemicals that deplete the ozone or carry health risks.

The comfort system is made up of four polyfoam layers. The top layer is infused with Essentialgel to promote cooling. All four layers in the comfort system work together to contour to the body and provide pressure relief. The bottom two comfort layers are denser transition layers, and they help keep sleepers from sinking down to the support core.

The support core consists of a layer of pocketed coils over stabilizing base foam. A reinforced perimeter bolsters the bed’s edge support.
